04 January –  In another example of bilateral cooperation between the,m the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Manila and the Philippine Embassy in Prague again found themselves in the front and center of the 11th FilmAsia Festival in Prague in December December 2015.  The festival, which was started in 2005 and which this year was held at both the Lucerna and Svetozar Theaters, amply demonstrated yet again that these two embassies are indeed carrying opposite ends of the same load.

Ambassadors Vic Lecaros of the Philippines and Jaroslav Olsa, Jr. of the Czech Republic opened the Festival, which started off with a screening of the 1950’s classic film “Genghis Khan” by the acclaimed late Filipino Director Manuel Conde.

This year’s Festival featured the Philippines together with the Festival’s main stay film offerings from South Korea, Japan and China.

The 11th FilmAsia Festival also presented for the first time six Filipino feature films in two theaters.  Also shown were Darna at Ding (1980), Dekada ‘70 (2002),  and the three independent films co-produced by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP): Lihis (2013), Sonata (2013), and Badil (2013).

According to the Festival’s director and producer Karla Stojáková, FilmAsia, the premier Asian film festival in the Czech Republic.  Thus, it provides “Czechs a glimpse of the best of what Asian cinema can offer”.  END

PHL Booth Draws Crowds at the International Christmas Festival of the Diplomatic Spouses Association in Prague

07 December – The Philippine Embassy in the Czech Republic joined some 40 other Embassies and diplomatic representaions in the capital city, Prague, at the annual International Christmas Festival on 30 November 2015.  The Festival, which is known as the International Bazaar in its Manila counterpart event, was likewise organized by the Diplomatic Spouses Association(DSA) in this Central European capital.  The Philippine Embassy was  represented by Mrs. Melissa Lecaros, spouse of PH Ambassador Vic Lecaros.

Czech First LadyMrs. Ivana Zemanová opened the Festival, which raises funds every year through internet sales, the sale of entry tickets and of various goods at the booths of participating countries -- including an ASEAN booth too.  The funds thus raised are intended to help charitable organizations in the Czech Republic.

Participants at the Philippine Embassy booth included Filipino-owned retailers like SoleiMer Prague, with their high-end pearl jewelry from the Philippines and the Pnoy Taste of Asia, which sold Philippine dry goods and handicraft items. 

The Filipinos donated some 100,000 Czech koruna (US$4,000) from their sales proceeeds to the DSA.  END

PH Ambassador Vic Lecaros joins Ambassadors of Malaysia and Thailand and representatives of Indonesian and Vietnamese Embassies with Mr. Jan Lacina, Deputy Mayor of Prague 6.

11 Nov. - The ASEAN Committee in Prague (ACP), which consists of the Embassies of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam represented in Prague, Czech Republic, in cooperation with Municipality of District 6, participated in the Farmer’s Market in Vitezne square, Dejvice on Saturday, 07 November 2015. 

Mr. Jan Lacina, Deputy Mayor of Prague 6 – where many embassies and consulates are located -- joined the ASEAN Ambassadors and Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. at the Opening Ceremony. 

The colorful and well-decorated booths of the ASEAN Embassies drew the attention of the local Saturday market goers as well as that of members of the diplomatic community.  Each participating country showcased its cuisine and local products.

P-NOY Taste of Asia, a Filipino shop in Prague, sold dried mangoes, canned juices and other dry goods from the Philippines.  A Filipino caterer sold rice cakes or “palitaw” and fried beef spring rolls, which were sold faster than they could be prepared.

The ASEAN Farmers’ Market, which started in 2013, aims to promote the cuisine and food products of ASEAN to the Czech public. END
